Alexander Vinther-Burroughs
Alexander Vinther-Burroughs (b. 1987) is a Danish artist based in Berlin, Germany. His practice — which spans sculpture, painting, time-based installation and video — is rooted in an agenda of autonomy that sees him approach each series as an opportunity to forge a new canvas for his artistic language within the artworks themselves. His works, imagined independent of concept, ask that the audience view them not as a vehicle for personal narratives, but as an exploration of interactions between materials, space, philosophy and movement.
The artist cites his upbringing in Langå, a rural town in East Jutland, with a population of fewer than 3000 people, as a central influence on his creative practice; fueling an interest in tools and industrial standards that has shaped his artistic thinking. Initially funnelling his ambitions into the music industry, Vinther-Burroughs moved to Aarhus at the age of 18, and later to Copenhagen. For two years, he studied Medialogy at Aalborg University, with a focus on how humans interact with machines. Having ended his studies prior to graduating, he subsequently applied to the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in ArtScience in 2016. Since then, he has lived and worked between Denmark, Paris, Milan and Berlin, pursuing his practice independently and in partnership with key figures from the worlds of fashion, design and fine art. Currently, he lives in Berlin with his wife and daughter and forms ¼ of the artist collective I would die for anything.
In March 2024, Vinther-Burroughs unveiled Heart Runners; a solo exhibition of works that sees the artist revisiting core pillars of his practice anchored in more than a decade of investigation. Applying a sculptural approach to both objects and oil paintings, the show centres the choreography between objects and the spaces they inhabit, while harnessing the language and legibility of more traditional mediums.
